Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes
The Manitowish Waters Chain of Lakes is a connected system of 10 primary lakes that together offer just over 4,200 surface acres of water wrapped in northern forest and low‑key development. Lakes like Island, Rest, Clear, Spider, Manitowish, Wild Rice, Little Star, Alder, and Fawn are linked by short channels and stretches of the 44‑mile Manitowish River, giving boaters a long, varied route that feels more relaxed and spread out than the Minocqua or Eagle River/Three Lakes chains while still delivering big‑water views. The chain is known for exceptionally clear lakes, diverse structure, and strong multi‑species fishing. Larger basins such as Island Lake (about 1,023 acres) and Rest Lake (around 655 acres) provide deep holes, mid‑lake humps, and long shorelines, while smaller waters like Fawn and Alder offer quieter coves and shallower, more intimate settings. Anglers target walleye, bass, northern pike, panfish, and the occasional trophy musky across the system, and local guides and tournaments make regular use of the chain’s varied habitats, from rock points and sand flats to cabbage beds and river neck‑downs. The excellent water clarity and mix of protected bays and open reaches also make the lakes popular for paddling, tubing, and leisurely pontoon cruises that can easily span several lakes in an afternoon. The surrounding landscape reinforces the chain’s reputation as a four‑season recreation hub. Much of the shoreline backs up to public forest or large, wooded parcels, so long stretches feel wild even where resorts, cabins, and a few marinas dot the lakes. Public boat launches on multiple lakes and nearby trail networks such as the Heart of Vilas bike system and the North Lakeland Discovery Center paths make it simple to combine time on the water with cycling, hiking, or winter sports based out of Manitowish Waters. For many visitors, that blend of clear water, relatively low boat density, and easy access to quiet bays, beaches, and forested shorelines is what makes the Manitowish Waters Chain feel like the classic Northwoods retreat.
