Big Muskellunge Lake

View of Big Muskellunge Lake, the 897 acre lake in Boulder Junction, Wisconsin
Big Muskellunge is an 897-acre lake south of Boulder Junction with an average depth of 26 feet and clear water (14' clarity). There are not many homes on the lake—64 acres of water per owner and only 1.7 owners per mile of shoreline—so it is quite rare that a home becomes available. The limited private development gives it a surprisingly wild, open feel, with lots of state land around the lake and even on busy days you're mostly looking at forest and water rather than dense cabin lines. The lake features a public beach and multiple public landings so it is very accessible to the public, making it a regional draw for both cabin owners and day users. Even if you don't live on the lake, it's a fun one to get out and explore if you are in the neighborhood. Access to the bike trail system is pretty easy, and I have heard good things about the fishing on the lake. Buyers who land on Big Muskellunge usually want a clear, deep lake with strong recreation options and a more natural shoreline, understanding that public access brings some extra traffic. This is a summary based on available information.

Big Muskellunge is a well-known multi-species lake with opportunities for muskies, walleyes, smallmouth and largemouth bass, pike, and panfish, supported by good water quality and diverse structure. Steep breaks, mid-lake humps, and weedlines along points and drop-offs are common targets, especially for walleyes and smallmouths in summer. Muskies patrol edges, saddles, and bars that connect structure pieces, and many anglers work them with bucktails, rubber baits, and topwaters in low-light periods. For cabin owners and frequent visitors, Big Muskellunge functions as both a high-quality swim-and-paddle lake and a serious, pattern-oriented fishery that rewards time spent learning contours and seasonal shifts.
