Conover is in between Eagle River and Land O’ Lakes.  If you drive through it as much as we do, there are a few landmarks you always notice.  There’s the Jensen-Akins hardware store (which seems to have almost anything you could ever need to get a job done, for a price), the Boathouse Grill & Creamery where you can have your dinner while sitting in a beached pontoon boat and Lake Pleasant, where the Chain Skimmers put on a Ski Show each Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 7:00pm.  It’s almost directly across HWY 45 from Lanny’s Fireside restaurant, another landmark. 

I took the family out to see the show this summer and we easily had $20 worth of fun.  That’s the cost of admitting two children, two adults, and in my case, a child under age 6.  If you get there early you’ll see some future Chain Skimmers practicing, and you can help them stay in business by buying snacks or refreshments from the concession stand.  

The show was just an hour long, but you during that hour they get out a couple of different boats and all types of different skis and wakeboards that make for interesting tricks.  They were short-staffed, but I think 15 or 20 different people were in the water performing during that hour, and that’s before accounting for the MC, who offers up a nice mix of humor and information about what you’re watching  happen on the lake.  The ski jump is part of the show, but there’s a lot of fun to be had jumping the wake and making human pyramids as well.  These skiers are great, but they’re not perfect.  There will be some falls, and you’ll enjoy those too.

I’m not sure we’ll be going back to check the show out anytime soon.  I had to talk my son Owen out of buying a wakeboard and water skis all the way home – and I don’t need to have that discussion again. I’m glad we checked it out because it was a beautiful night in the Northwoods and we got to look at a different lake with a lot of action.

Truthfully, the video on the city’s  website gives you a better view of the tricks than the videos posted below.  But it’s also taken from a drone – and that’s not the perspective you’ll have if you go check out the show.  So check out the photos below for a more accurate depiction.
